چکیده

Using the surface brightness fluctuations in HST WFPC-2 images, we determine that M87, NGC 4486B, and NGC 4478 are all at a distance of ∼ 16 Mpc, while NGC 4476 lies in the background at ∼ 21 Mpc. We also examine the globular clusters of M87 using archived HST fields. We detect the bimodal color distribution, and find that the amplitude of the red peak relative to the blue peak is greatest near the center. This feature is in good agreement with the merger model of elliptical galaxy formation, where some of the clusters originated in progenitor galaxies while other formed during mergers.

Observational Biases Masquerading as Cosmological Effects? a Cautionary Tale about Blue Tilts and Other Trends in Globular Cluster Systems

The high spatial resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has led to tremendous progress in many areas of astronomy. The ability of the HST to peer into the bright inner regions of galaxies and distinguish between globular clusters (GCs) and background objects has been particularly beneficial to the study of clusters. But the very virtue of the HST that has been an asset to such research ...

The Globular Cluster Luminosity Functions of Brightest Cluster Galaxies

A new technique for studying globular cluster populations around relatively distant galaxies is developed and applied to a sample of 23 galaxies in 19 Abell clusters. The technique is based on the surface brightness fluctuations method of determining galaxy distances. The galaxies in this sample range in redshift from 5000 to 10,000 km s1, and were selected from the Lauer & Postman (1994) surve...

A Quantitative Link Between Globular Clusters and the Stellar Halos in Elliptical Galaxies

This paper explores the quantitative connection between globular clusters and the “diffuse” stellar population of the galaxies they are associated with. Both NGC 1399 and NGC 4486 (M87) are well suited for this kind of analysis due to their large globular cluster populations. The main assumption of our Monte Carlo based models is that each globular cluster is formed along with a given diffuse s...

New Insights from a study of the Globular Cluster Systems of 60 Early - Type Galaxies

We present the results of our detailed WFPC2-based photometric study of the globular cluster systems (GCS) of over 60 elliptical and S0 galaxies. Approximately 50% of the GCSs of ellipticals, and at least 15-20% of S0s reveal bimodality in the color distribution. We trace the variation in GCS properties with Hubble type and discuss the implications on the various models of galaxy (and cluster s...

The Dynamics of the M87 Globular Cluster System

We present the results from a study of the dynamics of the system of globular clusters around M87. After eliminating foreground galactic stars and background galaxies, we end up with a sample of 205 bona fide M87 globular clusters for which we have radial velocities determined from multi-slit spectra taken with the LRIS on the Keck Telescope. We find that the mean radial velocity of the M87 glo...
